Colombo basics
Every way to get from Colombo's airport at Katunayake to the city centre and Galle Face Green, with October 2026 prices. Plus how to get a SIM card and rupees at the airport, and the online visa (ETA) you need before you fly.
Colombo’s airport (CMB) is at Katunayake, about 35 km north of Galle Face Green. By car it takes 45 to 75 minutes, mostly on the expressway. The official taxi counter charges a fixed 8,100 rupees (about $25), and a PickMe or Uber car usually costs less. The cheapest way is bus 187 to Colombo Fort, for about 325 to 365 rupees ($1).
Important: Before you fly, every visitor needs an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), a kind of online visa. Apply only on the official website, www.eta.gov.lk. Since 25 May 2026, the 30-day tourist ETA is free for people from 40 countries, including the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, India and Japan. People from other countries pay a fee. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you arrive.
The airport’s full name is Bandaranaike International Airport, but most people call it Colombo airport or Katunayake. It is about 35 km from Galle Face Green by road.
| Way to travel | Price (October 2026) | Time to Galle Face | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport taxi counter | 8,100 rupees (about $25) per car | 45 to 75 min | Fixed price. Ask if the toll is included. |
| PickMe or Uber car | About 4,000 to 6,000 rupees ($12 to $18) per car | 45 to 75 min | You need mobile data. The app shows the price first. |
| Hotel pickup | Ask your hotel | 45 to 75 min | The driver waits inside with your name on a board. |
| Bus 187 | About 325 to 365 rupees ($1) per person | About 50 min to Fort, then a 20 to 25 min walk | Runs 24 hours. Leaves from outside departures. |
PickMe (a Sri Lankan app) and Uber both pick up at the airport. The airport lists them as official ways to reach the city. They were allowed in 2023, after passengers complained about high taxi prices and people pushing them to take taxis.
In 2026, travel guides report about 4,000 to 6,000 rupees ($12 to $18) for a small car to central Colombo. A bigger car costs more, and so does a busy time. When Uber started airport pickups in 2023, it said the price in the app already includes the airport parking fee and the toll. With PickMe, ask the driver about the toll before you leave.
The Airport Taxi Service has counters in the arrivals hall and at the arrivals porch, and the airport company supervises it. The prices are fixed. For an air-conditioned car in October 2026:
It costs more than an app, but you do not need a phone or data, and you pay a known price. Before you pay, ask two things: is the expressway toll included, and can you pay by card?
Many hotels can send a car to meet you. Ask for the price when you book the room. It often costs more than an app, but it is the easiest choice after a long flight.
The driver can wait inside the arrivals hall with your name on a board. Send the hotel your flight number, so the driver knows if you land late.
Bus 187 is an air-conditioned bus from the airport to Colombo Fort railway station. It runs 24 hours a day and takes about 50 minutes.
The bus is great value if you travel light. With big bags, small children or after a night flight, a car is much easier.
Not one that helps. There is a small railway station at Katunayake, but trains to Colombo are few and slow, and the old airport express train is not running. Take the bus or a car.
The toll for a car is 400 rupees for the whole expressway, from Katunayake to the Kelani river. The driver pays it at the toll booth.
Many flights land late at night or very early in the morning. You can still get to the city:
At night, a car is safer and easier than the bus. If you land very late, book a hotel pickup before you fly. Say no to people who come up to you offering a taxi, and go to the counter or use an app instead. The UK government warns that people often drive badly at night and accidents are common. It also says some women travellers have been harassed at night.
Do these two things inside the arrivals hall, before you walk out to the cars.
A local SIM card is cheap, and you need data for PickMe, Uber and maps. Two phone companies, Dialog and SLT-Mobitel, have counters in the arrivals hall, right after customs.
Sri Lanka’s money is the rupee (written Rs or LKR). In October 2026, 1 US dollar was about 330 rupees.
Once you are in the city, our guide to getting around Colombo explains tuk-tuks, apps, buses and trains. If you have a day to explore, try our one day in Colombo plan, which ends with the sunset at Galle Face Green.
The easiest way is a car: book PickMe or Uber, or use the official taxi counter in the arrivals hall, which charges a fixed 8,100 rupees (about $25). The drive is about 35 km and takes 45 to 75 minutes. The cheapest way is bus 187 to Colombo Fort, then a 20 to 25 minute walk or a short tuk-tuk ride.
Yes. Uber and PickMe both pick up at Colombo airport, and the airport lists them as ways to get to the city. You need mobile data to book. The app shows the price before you book and tells you where to meet the driver.
The official airport taxi counter charges a fixed 8,100 rupees (about $25) to Fort, Galle Face, Kollupitiya and Pettah (October 2026). A PickMe or Uber car usually costs less, about 4,000 to 6,000 rupees, but the price changes with demand. Ask if the 400 rupee expressway toll is included.
It is not a good idea. Tuk-tuks are not allowed on the expressway, so the trip on the busy old road takes much longer. Take a car or bus 187 into the city, and use tuk-tuks for short trips once you are there.
No. Every visitor needs an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before they arrive. Apply on the official website, eta.gov.lk. Since 25 May 2026 the 30-day tourist ETA is free for people from 40 countries, including the UK, the USA, Australia and India.
Yes, some. There are exchange counters and ATMs in the arrivals hall. Get enough rupees for the first day or two, in small notes, because tuk-tuks, buses, street food and small shops usually want cash.
It can be easier. Negombo is a beach town about 10 km from the airport, and the airport taxi counter charges 3,780 rupees to go there. If you land late, you can sleep there and go to Colombo the next day.
